According to the World Bank, Croatia ended 2020 with a decline in the economy of 8.6 percent, which is less than forecast in the summer months.

It was then estimated that this percentage would be around 9.3 percent. The year we have stepped into, should be more favorable in terms of economic recovery, so the World Bank believes that after the next 12 months we will have an increase of 5.4 percent, and the year after growth of 4.2 percent, which would give our economy within two years, the state we had before the coronavirus pandemic.

The World Bank is warning governments around the world, that vaccination against Covid-19 and investment are key to recovery. By the way, in just the first three months of last year, a million people lost their jobs due to the pandemic, most of which affected workers in Central Europe and Russia. "In order to overcome the consequences of the pandemic and combat unfavorable investment trends, great efforts need to be made to improve the business environment, greater labor and product market flexibility, transparency and governance," said World Bank President David Malpass.

However, in the midst of the pandemic, the labor market in the EU and even in Croatia managed to stop the trend of a sharp increase in the number of unemployed. Moreover, in November, unemployment in Croatia decreased slightly and equaled the European Union average. In that month, Croatia had an average of 2,500 people infected with Covid-19 every day, and 135,000 citizens were out of work. But that is 5,000 less than in October 2020.

Eurostat calculated that in November 2020, the unemployment rate in the 27 member states of the Union, measured by the methodology of the International Labor Organization (ILO), was 7.5 percent and was 0.1 percentage point lower than in October. Almost 16 million citizens were out of work, of which 13.6 million were in the eurozone. - These are really big blows so far and I hope there won't be any more. The whole world is having big problems just because of the pandemic, and we have also had two devastating earthquakes. It has been our task all this time to put public finances and the budget to the maximum function and to protect human lives and jobs, and now reconstruction. We will continue to do that and that is why my main message to the citizens is that public finances and the budget will survive - said Minister of Finance Zdravko Marić.
