Entrepreneurs are required to pay the membership fee to the Croatian Chamber of Commerce (HGK), which they claim provides them with no benefits, but they see that the chamber's leader receives a monthly salary of 60,000 kuna.

Four days after the opposition brought down the quorum in the Parliament because the ruling party withdrew the vote on mandatory membership fees for the Croatian Chamber of Commerce at the last moment, the media are revealing the salaries of the HGK leaders, and the government promises to make a new law on the Croatian Chamber of Commerce. However, in those four days, the oldest HDZ parliamentary representative, the son of the late first president of Croatia, Miroslav Tuđman, passed away.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković emphasized that he remembers the opposition taking advantage of the situation and sabotaging the quorum while their colleague was fighting for his life with Covid. Unfortunately, Miroslav Tuđman is one of 5,071 people who died from Covid-19 in Croatia, as of February 2, 2021.

"We are witnessing numerous populist initiatives; the membership fee for those societies that have weaker traffic is 42 kuna per month. Nobody says that HGK cannot do better, but HGK has a tradition of more than 160 years, and these are not bodies that are dismantled quickly due to opposition whims. We can see what can be improved, but making a political circus for 42 kuna per month can only be done by the kind of opposition that Croatia has today," said the Prime Minister.

While the government is considering how to improve the work of this chamber, the media reports on the earnings of its leader. "The salary of Luka Burilović, the president of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce, is 23,000 kuna, as confirmed by HGK for Index. But in addition to that, Burilović has several other incomes. As a member of the Supervisory Board of Ina and Podravka, he receives about 32,000 kuna per month, as a member of the Management Board of the State Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency, he receives 1,800 kuna, and as a member of the Supervisory Board of Badel 1862, he receives another 4,000 kuna.

Based on the above, he appears to earn 60,000 kuna per month. The Croatian Chamber of Commerce has 394 employees, accounting for 32% of all costs, or about 62 million kuna. Entrepreneurs are quite bitter at the mere mention of HGK because they say they are forced to give them money, and then they watch it end up "on safari, in a hidden bunker full of expensive art," alluding to former HGK leader Nadan Vidošević, who spent 18 years at the helm of the chamber. "I have been in business for eight years, and I have not received anything from HGK, no service, no advice, no document, and before the appearance of the coronavirus, I did not even receive an email," said entrepreneur Marko Slišković for Dnevnik.hr, and he is just one of many with such a view.
