Inflation, low wages, loans, a minus on the account, the introduction of the euro... All this is what keeps many people from sleeping peacefully at night, without perhaps even realizing that finances are what is bothering them.

Stress is something that accompanies us every day. We are under stress because of work, numerous obligations, lack of time... But surely many are under stress (also) because of finances. Inflation, low wages, loans, a minus on the account, the introduction of the euro... All this is what keeps many people from sleeping peacefully at night, without perhaps even realizing that finances are what is bothering them. But financial stress makes us emotionally fragile. Women in Adria brings us several tips.

What is financial wellness?

Financial wellness is the comprehensive financial health of an individual. It's how you manage your economic life, writes BetterUp. As your financial wellness increases, so should your quality of life. For example, financial wellness brings you peace of mind when you think about your financial obligations and future. Namely, it is not only about the spending plan and saving for retirement, but also about the way of thinking about money and the emotions you feel at the same time. For example, anxiety about price increases.

Finances cause numerous problems

According to some research, finances are one of the most common causes of divorce and numerous illnesses. For some, avoiding facing the problem is stressful, but the problem needs to be tackled. Paying bills with your eyes "closed" and ironing your card every day without thinking is certainly not a way to manage your finances. Yes, it has to be done anyway, but it is important to do it consciously. Taking care of where our money goes and how much we spend is taking care of ourselves and our mental health. Although in a busy world, taking the time to think about finances seems impossible, it is worth the effort because it will bring you much-needed peace.

We all need financial security. It's the feeling that you have enough money to do what you want and not worry about it all the time. This sense of security contributes significantly to a generally better condition and our well-being.

How to achieve financial wellness?

If you want to feel better when you think about money and therefore feel better, try some of the following tips from Kozel.

  1. Keep records of expenses

Make a list of all current expenses - for food, utilities, credit... And don't forget to include unexpected expenses like buying clothes or birthday gifts for your loved ones.

  1. Make a spending plan

Having a plan for spending money is the best way to take care of yourself and improve financially. You should, of course, know where all your money is and what your financial obligations are, and know how much you earn and how much your money is worth.

  1. Eliminate debt

We live in an age when many have debt. If not credit, then debt on the card, minus in the bank... Try to eliminate at least some of it as soon as possible, because it is the path to financial stability and peace.

  1. Save money

It is a common belief that you need to have three to six months of savings in the bank to be safe. This goal is very unattainable, so many do not even try to reach it. It is true that only a few hundred euros or a couple of thousand kuna in savings improves your financial peace of mind. Your rule of thumb can be savings for one month of expenses.

  1. Set aside for the future

You should definitely think about the future, however distant it may be. Try to set aside at least 10-15 percent of your monthly expenses for your retirement fund. This is a very important and necessary long-term goal.

  1. Donate

Although we don't often have the opportunity, sometimes it is good to set aside for those less fortunate than us and donate a few kuna for orphans, refugees from Ukraine, earthquake victims, etc. Donate in accordance with your values and you will definitely feel mental well-being.

  1. Spend according to your personality and values

Some research has shown that people are happier if they spend according to their psychological fit (known as our identity). Economists used to think that all money was worth the same, meaning that money spent on a book was the same as money spent on a concert. But it's not like that! If you are a bookworm, buying a book will give you more benefits. This means that you can get more bang for your buck if you spend on what you love and what makes you happy. Of course, in moderation.

Although it may seem impossible, take one step at a time and reconcile current and future expenses, pay off debts, think about savings and make decisions that will help you enjoy life, instead of having eternal worries about finances.
