Senior Research Specialist (f/m) - Downstream Process Development

Full-time and permanent, to join the Vectorology Group, to run the upstream and downstream processes for viral vector production and contribute to our collaborative work on gene therapy vector generation.

This position covers all aspects of making gene therapy products. The Research Specialist will be involved in the establishment and running of up- and downstream processes for research grade gene therapy vectors. Additionally, he/she will prepare study protocols, and support the generation of research reports and technology transfer documentations. The research specialist also presents study results and technical developments at team or department meetings.

  • Lead and ensure delivery of downstream vector preparation methods (for example FPLC, gradient ultracentrifugation)
  • Support the implementation and development of upstream and downstream processes for research grade (non-GMP) AAV vectors (in particular chromatographic FLPC methods)
  • Oversee and maintain filtration and concentration procedures such as Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF) for viral and non-viral vectors.
  • Support the analysis of proteins: protein concentration, SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting
  • Develop and implement novel FPLC methods
  • Understand project timelines and deliverables and plan/coordinate project work accordingly with supervisor and functional stakeholders
  • Review and interpret data


  • You have an MS in Biotechnology or similar areas
  • You have several years of professional working experience in a process development lab
  • You have hands-on experience with ÄKTA Chromatography systems
  • Preferably, you have already worked on recombinant protein or viral vector expression
  • Experience in standard methods to analyze nucleic acids and proteins is a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills, work on multiple tasks simultaneously, paired with the competence for trouble shooting, and the ability to deliver on time
  • You are collaborative, helpful, reliable and determined
  • You have professional language skills in oral and written English and / or German
